Gods of the City, Gods of the People: The Pantheons of Adab in the Third Millennium B.C.
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The main aim of this research was to identify the characteristics and trace the evolution of the pantheon of Adab throughout the third millennium BC, utilizing dedicatory and votive sources, rations and offering lists, and theophoric onomastic analysis. The research establishes three significant findings. First, the usage of divine names in inscriptions by regional rulers, local rulers, and elites unveils a correlation between the employment of these names and the legitimization of political power. Second, the reconstruction of the pantheon of gods worshipped in Adab through ration and offering lists differs from the pantheon derived from local rulers and elites, signifying diverse religious practices and the prominence of specific deities. Furthermore, by adopting a diachronic approach, this study uncovers shifts in cultic personnel associated with different gods, providing insight into the evolution of religious practices. By conducting a comprehensive analysis of the available sources, this thesis illuminates the dynamics of certain aspects of religious tradition in Adab, highlighting the complexities surrounding the selection and veneration of deities in the ancient city. These findings enhance our comprehension of the socio-political and religious landscape of the third millennium B.C., underscoring the multi-faceted nature of divine worship and its implications for the power structures and identities of Adab's inhabitants.
