The Mind-Body Connection and Psychosocial Factors: an Examination of Depression, Parent-Child Conflict, and Inflammation in Children and Adolescents

The dissertation comprises three studies investigating the association between depression, inflammation, and parent-child conflictual relationships in children and adolescents. The first study is a meta-analysis that synthesized and quantified empirical studies examining the association of depression and inflammation among children and adolescents. Twenty-two studies (20, 791 participants) were included, and significant associations were observed between concurrent depression and C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Longitudinal analyses revealed that depression was a significant predictor of IL-6 and that inflammation (measured by CRP or IL-6) predicted future depression. The second and third studies used primary data from participants recruited through the Children’s Integrated Mood and Body Program (CLIMB) at The Hospital for Sick Children. Study Two examined the interactive effects of depression and parent-child conflict in a clinical sample of children and adolescents with MDD (N = 115) and healthy controls (N = 60). Results indicate that parent-child conflict and depression significantly interacted and were associated with CRP. The association between conflict and CRP was substantial at low levels of depression and not at high levels of depression, suggesting that low parent-child conflict represents a protective factor for children and adolescents with low levels of depressive symptoms. The model accounted for a significant amount of the variance of levels of CRP. Using an autoregressive cross-lagged panel model, the third study explored the longitudinal association between depressive symptoms, parent-child conflict, and inflammation in children and adolescents with MDD (N = 163). Results found a significant cross-lagged association between depression at baseline and inflammation 6 months later, though not between conflict at baseline and later inflammation. Within time points, parent-child conflict and inflammation were significantly associated. Together, this dissertation contributes to the research on the association between mental health and physical health in children and adolescents and the critical role played by psychosocial factors within their environments. Results highlight the significant role of depression and parent-child conflict on levels of inflammatory biomarkers in children and adolescents. Parent-child conflict and depression may be important targets for intervention among youth to improve physical health outcomes. Directions for future research and implications for clinical practice are discussed.
