Neurobiological Correlates of Emotion Dysregulation in Children with and without Externalizing Behaviours
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
Externalizing behaviours (e.g., rule-breaking and aggression) are among the most common reasons for referral to child mental health services and are a robust predictor of poor outcomes across the lifespan. Affected children often also present with significant and impairing emotion dysregulation and callous-unemotional (CU) traits. Emerging evidence points to overlap among emotion dysregulation and CU traits at the behavioural level, but less is known about shared underlying neural correlates. This thesis brings together three separate studies that aim to further our understanding of the common and distinct neurobiological underpinnings of externalizing behaviours, emotion dysregulation, and CU traits in children and adolescents. The studies were conceptualized to be unique and sequential, such that the results of each study would inform and build upon the next. In study one, a systematic review was conducted that aimed to summarize the neurobiological correlates of emotion dysregulation and CU traits in children with externalizing behaviours to identify potential convergence in implicated brain regions. Study two used regions of interest (ROIs) identified in study one to investigate baseline and post-treatment (i.e., pre/post psychosocial intervention targeting conduct problems) neurobiological correlates of emotion dysregulation and CU traits in a pilot sample of children (9-12 years) with an externalizing disorder. Study three also used ROIs identified in study one to examine potential shared neural correlates of externalizing symptoms, emotion dysregulation, and CU traits in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (ABCD), both cross-sectionally and longitudinally over a 2-year follow-up period (9-11 years at baseline). Together, the work presented in this thesis suggests that there are both common and distinct brain-behaviour relationships linked to externalizing behaviours, emotion dysregulation, and CU traits. Moreover, findings shed light on an emerging paradigm whereby treatment response and trajectories of psychopathology might be predicted from brain structure at critical developmental time points in childhood. An improved understanding of these relationships may lead to future clarification of when, and how often, brain structure can be predictive of current and future psychopathology and, in turn, lead to opportunities to develop tailored interventions for children with externalizing behaviours.
