Bimaadiziwin (To Live Well) as a Zhaaganaash (White Christian Englishman) in Canada: A Decolonial Theological Engagement with Anishinaabe Nanaboozho Trickster Discourse

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a missio-theology of decolonization through repentance for colonial-settler Christian Canadians. It seeks to encourage European colonial-settlers to become settler-allies in solidarity with Indigenous well-being on Turtle Island. The country of Canada is founded on very one-sided understandings of who can own and inhabit the land. European/Christian understandings of the Doctrine of Discovery and terra nullius justified their colonization and settling of today’s Canada. Many Christians and their churches were complicit in the original contacts but even more so as colonial-settlers, that is colonialists who do not leave. The methodology here is to draw from two resources each considered foundational in their traditions. From Christian resources I draw from the missiology discussions about the missio-Dei, that is the mission of God. Considering the nature of God as missionary requires the church to continue considering missions regardless of its marriage with colonialism, but with a different aim, and possibly, another name. The perichoretic nature of the missionary God is explored for help in shaping settler-ally behavior. Receiving and giving are vital parts of good relations. From the Indigenous perspective I draw from Trickster discourse, primarily Anishinaabe Nanaboozho writings. Trickster undergirds the communitarian foundations of Indigenous life. Individualistic oriented Canadians could learn from Trickster. Trickster’s wandering and greedy behavior provides strong images of colonial behavior. The comic vision that Trickster represents will be put alongside a colonial vision and its tragic consequences. Learning how to laugh at oneself is an important element of humility, which is an important part of repentance. The missio-Dei and Trickster can be brought together in such a way to decolonize settlers to be in solidarity and partnership for the good life for Indigenous people, ultimately for all our relations. This missio-theology is guided by the vision of the Guswenta where two separate and sovereign presences canoe down the river and where the middle is available to either side to enter (Trickster-like) in order to maintain mutual benefit for all.
