Vulnerable Temporalities of the AIDS Crisis in 21st Century Colombian Cuir, Marica, and Travesti Narratives

This thesis examines Colombian cuir, marica, and travesti literature within the context of the HIV/AIDS crisis, delving beyond the historical impact of the disease to explore how this body of literature reshapes readers’ understanding of the complexities of living with or dying from HIV/AIDS. Focused particularly on the peak of the crisis during the late 1980s and early 1990s, the study probes deeper into the unique aspects of Latin American, especially Colombian, discourses on HIV/AIDS, systemic oppression, the portrayal of characters, and the disruption of conventional narratives of time and futurity. The analysis highlights how Colombian cuir, marica, and travesti literature challenge linear temporal narratives. In the context of HIV/AIDS, where futures are often perceived as truncated or nonexistent, these narratives introduce a non-linear conception of time that reflects the unpredictability and often non-progressive nature of the disease. This disruption critiques traditional expectations of life trajectories and reproduction, suggesting new ways to envision the future, including cuir realities, chosen kinship, and non- traditional family forms.ii Moreover, engaging with these narratives fosters deeper empathy and enhances understanding of the struggles faced by the most vulnerable within the Colombian LGBTQ+ community. It provides a critical lens for examining ongoing issues related to HIV/AIDS, cuirness, and societal oppression, advocating for the use of historical insights to inform contemporary and future approaches to these challenges. This thesis argues that Colombian cuir, marica, and travesti narratives are vital for re-engaging with radical, intersectional perspectives. They not only depict the lived experiences of those marginalized by mainstream narratives but also actively challenge and expand the discourse around HIV/AIDS, queerness, and identity in Colombia. Settings like gay bars and drag performances serve as poignant symbols of the complex interplay of joy, celebration, fear, vulnerability, and loss, existing in a liminal space between legality and illegality and ironically becoming hotbeds for the spread of HIV. The primary texts analyzed include John Better’s Locas de felicidad, Sánchez-Baute’s Al diablo la maldita primavera, and Fernando Molano Vargas’ Vista Desde Una Acera, each contributing to a nuanced understanding of cuir experiences during and after the AIDS crisis in Colombia.
