Nonperturbative physics of center-stabilized compactifications of Yang-Mills theory A new perturbative method for extracting effective spin models out of condensed matter systems
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
This thesis presents four completed research papers in both theoretical high energy physics and theoretical condensed matter physics. The high energy theory work uses the semiclassical calculation techniques available in center- stabilized compactifications of Yang-Mills (YM) theory to explicitly work out how ’t Hooft anomalies involving generalized symmetries are matched. The first paper studies the mixed anomaly between the discrete chiral symmetry and the 1-form center symmetry in SU(N) supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on R3 × S1L. By integrating out all heavy modes to 1 loop order, topological terms are derived in the IR effective field theory which match the anomaly. The second paper derives mixed 0-form/1-form anomalies from operator algebras on the Hilbert space of YM theories on a spatial torus with twisted boundary conditions. The third paper builds on the similarities between these two cases and investigates the connection between different compactifications by studying the semi-infinite volume limit of SYM, QCD(adj) and deformed YM theories on twisted R × T3 as it approaches R3 × S1L. The final paper is a condensed matter theory paper that proposes and tests a new and improved method for deriving effective spin models from d-orbital and f-orbital Mott insulators. This method improves upon standard perturbative techniques by using a two-step approach to carefully integrate out the first excited states above the effective spin-1/2 degrees of freedom.
