Résumé
This paper presents a detailed analysis of the novel The Handmaid's Tale by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, with an emphasis on the depiction of the loss of personal identity, the repressive mechanisms of a totalitarian regime, the experience of trauma, and the ways in which women oppressed by the system find forms of internal resistance. The novel is set in the dystopian state of Gilead, where women lose all basic rights and become means of reproduction within a theocratic and patriarchal society. Through the character of the main character Offred, the process of dehumanization is depicted, but also the preservation of individuality through memory, language, and silent forms of rebellion. The paper explores how Atwood uses symbolism, the structure of fragmented storytelling, and internal monologue to depict the psychological consequences of living in a repressive system.
