This article analyzes the measures of the KGB of the Soviet Union to discredit the anti-Soviet part of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada. It has been established that during the Cold War the Soviet secret services carried out measures to “decompose anti-Soviet emigrant organizations.” Based on a review of declassified documents of the Sectoral State Archives of the Security Service of Ukraine and the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine, this study demonstrates the methods used toward this end. The KGB’s “active measures,” the objectives of which were, among other things, to spread in fluence over the diaspora were divided into official ones (the formation of “favorable perceptions about Soviet reality”; the dissemination through the media of negative information about leading diaspora figures; and the opposition of the so-called “progressives” to the anti-Soviet part of the diaspora) and operative-intelligence actions ( creating through disinformation the image of Ukrainians as disloyal citizens of Canada; the discrediting, through publications, of individual and group representatives to reduce their public authority; the infiltration of agents into emigrant groups to create their breakup; attempts to prevent the creation of a single bloc of anti-Soviet organizations by fueling political strife and conflict among Canadian Ukrainians; and the breaking away from anti-Soviet organizations of members and the creation of false “nationalist groups,” etc.). The KGB measures were aimed at preventing possible “ideological diversions” and to neutralize “unfriendly” emigrant centres. The conclusions of the article emphasize that the KGB perceived a significant part of the Ukrainian Canadian community as capable of indoctrination of members to the degree of conducting “ideological diversions” against the Soviet Union. As a result, the Soviets sought to “decompose” and discredit the anti-Soviet part of the Ukrainian diaspora, occasionally achieving a positive result.
