Cinchona: A Historically Important Medicinal Plant with Modern Health Implications
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
The most important Medicinal plant in human history is Cinchona. Cinchona belongs to the Family Rubiaceae. Cinchona is the national tree of Peru. Cinchona originated in South America. Cinchona saved the Lives of more than 400 crore people from Malaria and other fatal diseases. Tribal people of South America discovered its medicinal properties about 25,000 years ago. Cinchona bark is medicinal important part of this small tree or large shrub. The 12th Director of the Indian Botanic Garden (started in 1787), Kolkata, was an Allopathic Doctor, Dr. Thomas Anderson, from 1862. Anderson planted Cinchona in One Lakh acres in Darjeeling, one lakh acres in Sri Lanka and 1,36,000 acres in Ooty, South India. The father of Homoeopathy was also an Allopathic doctor, Dr. Sammel Hanneman. The first medicine of Homoeopathy is also Cinchona. Cinchona is not mentioned in Ayurvedic texts because most were written before the large-scale plantations of Cinchona in Nepal and India. Quinine factories were started at Mungpoo (Darjeeling) and Naduvattam (Ooty); two floors of the Indian Museum, Kolkata, were used for storing Cinchona bark and quinine in liquid and tablet form, 200 mg to 600 mg. Homoeopathic use of Cinchona can be considered a Nanomedical approach, and further research will make a significant impact on all types of fever, malaria, lung diseases, organ transplantation, etc. About 35 – 40 years back, Quina medicine was the main medicine of Allopathy. Ayurvedic Researchers, Homoeopathic researchers, Allopathic researchers and nano researchers should do more research so that we can expect wonders with this South American plant, which has proven its possibilities in Human history worldwide.
