The Episodes of Can Reace in the Cambodian Chronicle Based on the Oral Traditions

The extant versions of the Cambodian Chronicle were composed later than the end of the 18th century, so that its worth as a source material has been doubted. Michael Vickery has declared “the entire chronicular history of Cambodia up to the first quarter of the 16th Century is a fiction.” Vickery offers the hypothesis that (1) before the extant versions of Cambodian history were written, there existed a “pre-Nong" chronicle, which began with Nibbanapad/Ang Cand (Can Reacea) in the 16th century and which ended in the mid-18th century, (2) the 14th century was chosen as the starting point of a new chronicle, and (3) Nibbanapad’s reign was set back two hundred years and the intervening space was filled up names and stories borrowed from other contexts.This article reexamines Vickery’s hypothesis. Vickery says that the Cambodian Chronicle, particularly the VJ-version, contains many episodes from oral tradition; but he did not collect any oral tradition to compare with the texts of the Cambodian Chronicle. So the author collected oral tradition in the district southwest to Tonle-Sap and compared them with the Chronicle, resulting in (1) the Chronicle does include some episodes that are similar to oral tradition, (2) the versions of the Chronicle composed later include more episodes common to oral tradition, and (3) in the Chronicle, these episodes appear as meritorious deeds of the kings who built new capitals. This indicates the possibility that some oral tradition was chosen and adopted as episodes related to the builder-kings when the Chronicle was composed. As the result of her reexamination of Vickery’s process, the author could not recognize the difference in the credibility of descriptions before and after Can Reacea’s reign. There are no contemporary records to confirm the existence of Can Reacea, and an his episodes in the Chronicle cannot be determined as factual.It is the author’s opinion about the worth of the Cambodian Chronicle as a source material, that (1) it is inappropriate to consider any episodes in the Chronicle factual without consulting the contemporary records and (2) nevertheless, the Chronicle is worth studying as historiography composed by the Cambodian kingship before French influence.
