Résumé
In order to investigate a current structure and water mixing processes over the Beaufort shelf break, which locates in the Pacific side of the Canadian Basin in the Arctic Ocean, we carried out the CTD and ship-onboard ADCP observations during the Arctic cruise of R/V Mirai (MR99-K05) and the mooring observation (BFK-98) over the Beaufort shelf break.Cold Halocline Water spreads widely in the Arctic Ocean and is formed by winter atmospheric cooling and brine drainage accompanied with sea-ice formation over a continental shelf.Observational results show that the characteristic of Cold Halocline Water is modified by the inflow of the Bering Summer Water and the upwelling of the Atlantic Water. The inflow of the Bering Summer Water generates mesoscale eddies around the Barrow canyon.Strong velocity shear accompanied with the mesoscale eddies plays an important role of the mixing between the Bering Summer Water and the Cold Halocline Water. Therefore, the characteristic of the Cold Halocline water becomes fresher and warmer due to the mixing with the Bering Summer Water, especially in late summer and early autumn. On the other hands, the upwelling of the Atlantic Water, which is accompanied with westward wind, is also important to modification processes of the Cold Halocline Water.Strong shear variance is found in and after the period of the upwelling of the Atlantic Water. It means that the generation and breaking of internal wave promote the mixing of the Cold Halocline Water with the Atlantic Water.Particularly in late winter and spring, the characteristics of the Cold Halocline Water are modified into warmer and saltier.
