Résumé
Following his very serious illness a quarter of a century ago at an Academy meeting in New York, Irv Borish was hospitalized and I helped to care for him and his beloved Bea until they could return home to Indiana. Though I adamantly refused to accept any gift of appreciation, Irv, an accomplished artist, insisted that he prepare a painting for my home. He drew a magnificent rendition of the New York City skyline highlighted by the twin towers of the now destroyed World Trade Center. The day after the tragic and horrific attack upon New York City (and upon the Pentagon), I viewed the painting again, but this time more contemplatively. The towers were a symbol of economic strength that proudly stood several hundred yards across the bay from the Statue of Liberty, our country's great symbol of political freedom. But oppressors and aggressors and, yes, terrorists, too, have learned that nothing rouses this country more resolutely that an attack upon our precepts of state, of freedom, and of our way of life. The lesson will again be learned by those who did not understand us. The World Trade Center and its environs, now the cruel cemetery for more than 5000 innocent victims, will without question be rebuilt, probably in a different structural configuration and with a permanent memorial for those who died. But it will, also, be a monument to our cherished freedoms that the terrorists so mendaciously tried and failed to destroy. In the general assembly held at the noon hour on Thursday, September 13th, the day all of our SUNY classes resumed their schedules, I addressed the entire student body, as well as the faculty and staff. But most of all, my remarks were for our future colleagues, our students. I told them that I was raised as a child to believe that the most powerful antidote to those who would do bad deeds was for people to do well. What a wonderful calling in life is optometry that each day we minister to our patients by doing good things for them, to help to better their lives, and to prevent and alleviate disability. How fortunate they were to have chosen optometry as their career path. They were destined to do good things for people, the most powerful weapon against those who would perpetrate evil.
