Development of Ukrainian Studies and Publishing Activities at the University of Toronto

The article examines the formation and development of Ukrainian studies and publishing activities at the University of Toronto as one of the leading centers of Ukrainian studies in North America. The main stages of the institutionalization of Ukrainian studies are traced: from the introduction of the first Ukrainian language and history courses in the 1940s and creation of the Department of Ukrainian Studies in 1979 - to activities of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies and the implementation of the Petro Yatsyk Ukrainian Studies Programme. The focus is on the role of Ukrainian patrons and public organizations in the development of Ukrainian studies programs, as well as on international initiatives that ensured the university integration into the global academic space. The publishing activities of the University of Toronto Press, which played a key role in shaping the global image of Ukraine, are the subject of special author’s attention. The fundamental works of Orest Subtelny (History of Ukraine), Paul Magochii (Illustrated History of Ukraine), Thomas Pryimak, Volodymyr Kubievich (Encyclopedia of Ukraine), Serhiy Plokhii and other leading scholars, were published by this publishing house. These publications became definitive for the world of Ukrainian studies, were widely cited and prompted the spreading of knowledge about Ukraine among the English-speaking audience. The article emphasises the importance of university library collections, which contain unique materials on the history of the Ukrainian diaspora and providing conditions for interdisciplinary research. The dynamics of the development of Ukrainian studies is shown: from local initiatives of the Ukrainian community of Toronto to a modern international center for humanitarian research that carries out academic exchanges, organizes conferences, supports young scholars, and promotes Ukraine as an object of global scientific discourse. It is concluded that the experience of the University of Toronto is an illustrative example of the successful integration of Ukrainian studies programs into the structure of Western academic institutions. Potential areas for further research include the analysis of digital humanities projects, the influence of contemporary political events on academic discourse, and the conclusion of a complete bibliographic repertoire of Ukrainian studies publications from the University of Toronto Press.
