Notice bibliographique
Résumé
As far as I have been able to gather very little if anything has been published on the birds of this particular part of the country, and it •nay be well therefore to give stone indication as to the exact location of Harley and the County of Stanstead, of which the former forms one of the northern divisions.Looking at the •nap the county of Stanstead will be found stowed away as it were almost in the extreme southeast corner of the Province of Quebec; the southern border adjoining the State of Vermont, whilst the nearest point on the eastern side is ;vithin ten •niles of the borders of New Hmnpshire, and thirty of Maine. The entire county co•nprises an area of about 410 square •niles or 263,000 acres.Few parts of the country present a greater variety of surface than Stanstead County. The land' on the eastern shore of Lake Me•nphremagog (a large sheet of water some 33 •niles in length and frmn one to three •niles in width) and extending through Harley on the west side of Lake Massawippi is hilly and broken, the •nost prominent elevations being the Bunker and Massawippi hills, the latter rising to about 1400 feet above the sea level. The courses of the four principal rivers, the Barlow, Negro, Coaticook and Massawippi (none of which are of any great size or i•nportance) are marked by uneven banks and hilly ground which generally extends for about a mile on each side. The three first have their source in the State of Vermont from which they flow in a northerly direction, the Barlow and Negro on the left hand side of thc county and the Coaticook on the right side, the two former c•nptying the•nselves into Lake Massawippi at its southern extremity and bcing conveyed away at the northern end by the Massawippi river; which after flowing in a northeasterly direction for about eight •niles joins the St. Francis near Lennoxville the same as the Coaticook river does on the east side, and thus the waters of these four rivers eventually find their way into the St. Lawrence by means o• the St. Francis, Vol.XXX1I ] 1916MousLEY, Birds of Hatley, Que.
