Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment of land at PSI Nurseries, Braithwell, South Yorkshire

ARCUS were commissioned by Moorfield Homes Limited to undertake a desk-based assessment of land at the Plants of Special Interest Nurseries site, Braithwell, Doncaster, South Yorkshire (centred on SK 529 944). The assessment was produced in relation to a planning application for residential redevelopment at the site and included a site visit, along with documentary and cartographic research. The proposal area is situated within an area of extensive Iron Age and Romano- British settlement and was part of the important Anglo-Saxon and Viking lordship of Conisbrough. The site is located within the historic core of Braithwell, a settlement recorded in Domesday Book. While cartographic analysis suggests that the proposed development area may have been occupied by burgage plots during the medieval period, this cannot be demonstrated with certainty on the basis of current evidence and the sites former internal boundaries have not survived. The northern part of the site was formerly associated with the 16 th-century Orchard House Farm and may have been in use as crofts or back yards into the 19 th century. Two large grass plots occupied the site in 1839 and by 1854 the area had been sub- divided into three, one plot of which appeared to have been part of an orchard. With the exception of a small, corrugated iron shed that stood within the proposal area during the third quarter of the 20th century, no buildings are known to have been present within the site prior to the development of the PSI Nurseries during the early 1990s. Due to the sites location within the medieval core of Braithwell, previously unknown archaeological deposits cannot be ruled out and the minimal nature of later developments within the site may suggest that any sub-surface medieval or early post-medieval deposits may be preserved in good condition. However, topsoil was removed in many areas within the proposal area during the creation of the nurseries and the sites archaeological potential is considered to be low to moderate.
