Résumé
FOR A STRONGER AND WIDER EUROPEAN UNION (2005): Jean Monnet Studies on European Integration, Constitutional Reform and EU Enlargement Abstract For a Stronger and Wider European Union is an interdisciplinary scholarly volume coordinated by Simion Costea and published in 2005 within the framework of the European Commission's Jean Monnet Programme (European Module). Produced at a decisive moment in the history of European integration—immediately following the 2004 enlargement and during the debates surrounding the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe—the volume brings together fourteen contributions by distinguished historians, legal scholars, political scientists, specialists in European studies, and outstanding young researchers from Romania and Belgium. The publication represents one of the earliest collective academic works in Romania to examine, from an interdisciplinary perspective, the institutional, legal, political, and historical implications of the enlarged European Union. The volume analyses major themes that continue to shape European integration today, including the evolution of European institutions, the European Commission, the European Court of Justice, the principle of subsidiarity, European political parties, constitutional reform, supranationalism and intergovernmentalism, the European Neighbourhood, regional security, labour law harmonisation, and Romania's accession to the European Union. The contributors approach these subjects through complementary historical, legal, and political science methodologies, illustrating the complexity of European governance and integration. The scientific contribution of the volume lies in its interdisciplinary methodology, the diversity of scholarly perspectives, and its ability to connect theoretical debates with the practical challenges faced by the European Union during one of the most significant periods of institutional transformation in its history. Coordinated under the Jean Monnet Programme, the book also illustrates the role of European-funded academic cooperation in promoting excellence in European Union studies and fostering dialogue between Romanian and Western European scholarship. Twenty years after its publication, many of the questions addressed in this volume remain highly relevant. Constitutional reform, institutional effectiveness, democratic legitimacy, the balance between supranational and intergovernmental decision-making, EU enlargement, neighbourhood policy, regional security, and the integration of candidate countries continue to occupy a central place in European political and academic debates. The volume therefore constitutes both an important historical testimony to the intellectual climate preceding Romania's accession and a valuable scholarly resource for understanding the long-term evolution of European integration. As a Jean Monnet publication bringing together contributions from established academics and emerging scholars, it represents a significant contribution to the development of European studies in Romania and to the broader international literature on the European Union.
