Archaeological evaluation of Prince Albert School, Perry Barr, Birmingham

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Worcestershire Archaeology (WA) in May 2019 at Prince Albert School, Birmingham (NGR SP 07289 91436). The project was commissioned by CgMs Consulting Ltd whose clients propose development of the site as a new secondary school with sixth form for 1,260 pupils. It was considered that the proposed development had the potential to impact upon specific heritage assets in particular remains of Ryknild Street, a Roman Road (MBM2482). A geophysical survey of the site identified three linear anomalies, two of which were considered to be derived from the buried remains of roadside ditches Eight 50m trenches were intended to be excavated across the site, of which five targeted the linear anomalies thought to derive from Ryknild Street and a further east-west aligned anomaly in the northwest corner of the site. The remaining three trenches were placed to test suggested blank areas. The north-east corner of the site was not targeted at all due to known soil contamination recorded within geological test pits. In the event, the amount of trenching was curtailed following discussion with the client and curator due to the presence of asbestos in the ground. Four trenches targeting the potential Roman road were excavated one of which was shortened whilst one was omitted entirely. The evaluation revealed the Ryknild Street albeit a very truncated section of the road. Two parallel ditches were recorded which, though undated, are thought very likely to be the roadside ditches relating to the Roman road. Though no surface remained, the distance between the ditches was 18m which is a comparable distance between ditches as excavated to the north east on Ryknild Street, at the junction with Watling Street. Two ditches recorded in one trench to the east of the road contained 18 th Century pottery and are interpreted as representing boundaries or drainage. A made ground deposit contained a spread of material identified as waste from the pearl button industry. The raw materials recovered include pearl oyster and commercial top shell native to the Indo-Pacific region and imported into the country. It is thought that the waste is likely to have come from a small, local workshop.
