«"Nature is always there:"» the role of nature in the adaptation process of immigrant children

As families are becoming increasingly urbanized, children have fewer opportunities to discover, explore, and adventure outdoors, whether through work or leisure activities. This change in daily routine has raised concern for some who feel that children’s developmental process may be compromised. To determine whether this is so, researchers have begun to examine the role of nature in children’s health and well-being. Few studies identify however, what exactly transpires in these interactions and which domains of children’s lives are affected by these nature encounters. This study sought to fill this gap through a phenomenological exploration concerning the role of nature in the determinants of health of immigrant children. The first phase of research took place during six weeks of data collection with children in nature-based, urban, summer day camps. The second phase of research took place with many of the same children in the context of one-time family interviews. This thesis begins with a discussion concerning the historical and theoretical underpinnings for this study. This is followed by a description of the main findings in the format of three articles. The first article reveals that nature played a significant role in the health and well-being of immigrant children and families, mitigating several of the negative outcomes of the social determinants of health pertinent to Montreal immigrant children and families. The second article demonstrates that nature served to nurture the child participants in their own relational development. Immigrant children accessed nature to meet emotional and relational needs in a manner similar to how they might seek out a parent or caregiver. The third article provides a “behind the scenes” look at how these data were collected, and in doing so, offers an analysis concerning context and motivation in child research. In the final chapter, the main findings are reviewed in light of social determinants of health relevant to immigrant children. This is followed by a discussion concerning implications for social work practice.
