Photography was undertaken in 35mm digital SLR colour photography (using a 10.4 Mpixel format). Photography was undertaken of the buildings to create a primary archive and included general shots of the site and detailed photography of room arrangement; main elevations and constructional details such as window and door openings, and fixtures and fittings such as doors and window fenestration. Weather conditions on both days were bright with long sunny intervals becoming warmer and increasingly sunny after 10am. Low light levels necessitated the use of flash in all interior situations and included some fill-in flash to penetrate the shadows in the exterior shots. The photographs were further supplemented by Room-based record sheets and Brickwork recording sheets. Brooklyn House, a large detached house, is Grade II Listed and will not be affected by the proposed works. The buildings which are the subject of the planning application comprise a subsidiary stable block at the rear of the property (Brooklyn Court Stables) and a 2-storey extension to the main house which fronts directly on to Brook Street (Brooklyn Court); the owner requested that the survey be extended to incorporate Brooklyn House in case future alterations are considered. Brooklyn House appears to have begun as a more modest two-storey building, raised to its current three-storey configuration when a large service range was added at the rear. It is in fact to this mid-Victorian makeover that much of the imposing appearance, including the hipped slate roof and modillion cornice, can be attributed. For most of its identifiable history, it was both the dwelling and the practice centre of a doctor. The stables at the rear perhaps have an earlier origin than the house, and it seems likely that this building is a surviving part of a farmstead shown on this site on a map associated with the enclosure of Shepshed parish in the late 18th century. Brooklyn Court, situated to the north side of the original part of Brooklyn House, has a very complex development, with a series of extensions and conversions. The formal entrance suggests that this building may have housed the publicly accessible medical practice, successively extended to supply an increasing number of patients and attesting to the success of the practice. No. 44 Brook Street appears to have remained a medical practice into recent history, but had been converted to office use by the time it was listed in 1984. Conversion to modern office space has had a significant impact on all the buildings, with some original room arrangement lost or obscured along with nearly all of the original fixtures, fittings and decoration of the interior. This building survey has recorded and provided an archive of the buildings to be altered, along with their parent dwelling to preserve the group by record prior to the redevelopment and the consequent loss of historic evidence contained in their fabric.
