Le mythe du "Great American Novel" en littérature Québécoise: Victor-Lévy Beaulieu, Louis Hamelin et Daniel Grenier
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
This thesis offers a reflection on “américanité” centered on the emergence and reactivation of the myth of the Great American Novel in Québécois literature through three works: Monsieur Melville (1978) by Victor-Lévy Beaulieu, La constellation du Lynx (2010) by Louis Hamelin and L’année la plus longue (2015) by Daniel Grenier. The dream of the Great American Novel, which originates from the United States’ literary history, correlates the emergence of a young nation and the affirmation of its literature: starting from the end of the Civil War, critics and writers have expressed the desire of a total novel which would come to expose their country’s national identity. These three texts problematize this myth and adapt it to their local context. Our objective will be to draw, through a comparative and socio-critical analysis, a global portrait of the transformations subjected to this almost unprecedented model in province’s literary sphere. We will define, in dialogue with existing criticism, the peculiarities and the established criteria of this literary form in order to observe the particular way in which Beaulieu, Hamelin and Grenier refer to this model. Such an analysis will lead us to trace the evolution of the theme of national ambition in these Québécois reworkings of the Great American Novel. Particular attention will be paid to the lineage these authors claim to have with American authors, but also to the narrative structure of the doomed quest for knowledge found in each of the diegeses. This comparison will lead us to conclude that the model of the Great American Novel is a very malleable form in the Québécois context and that it, in such, reveals itself as a particularly effective fictional device for renewing the novelistic genre both as a popular form aimed at a wider audience and as a “scholarly” form which never ceases to play with its own codes
