The institutionalization of diasporic identity: a study of the university of the Fraser Valley's centre for Indo-Canadian studies
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
This dissertation addresses how a university centre dedicated to the study of diasporic identity represents the constitution of regional, national, and transnational communication networks. The creation and operation of these communicative networks requires individuals to negotiate a myriad of differences, including level of education, socio- and religio-cultural background, and occupation. I investigate the ways in which those involved in the establishment and operation of the Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies, in Abbotsford, British Columbia negotiated those differences, and highlight the evidence of institutional solidarity, diasporic identity politics, and the local and transnational movement of knowledge and capital that resulted from those negotiations. I argue that the Centre provides an example of diasporic identity politics in practice, as it aims to create spaces for the study of Indo-Canadian experience and history at the university. The Centre's existence and its ability to provide these spaces is constituted by communication networks made up of local and regional institutions. This dissertation's findings are based on a variety of collected and analyzed texts, including; qualitative interviews, the Centre's promotional materials, course syllabi, descriptions of the Centre's pedagogical approach, and participant observation of courses, lectures, and public events offered by the Centre. While a majority of the research took place at the Centre itself, the dissertation research also included fieldwork in India, with Fall 2016 visits to the Centre's partner institutions in India, including UFV India, in Chandigarh, India, and the University of Mumbai. My work interrogates a previously unexplored Canadian diasporic communitive site – the medium-sized, rural university. By moving away from the diasporic city to diasporic experience in the context of a rural community, I provide new ways to think about transnationalism and diasporic communicative practice.
