The narrative follows Mak-dong, a young man recently discharged from the military, who returns to a hometown he no longer recognizes. He encounters a young woman on a train where he becomes entangled with a gang of thugs who are harassing her. Mak-dong’s home life has also been disrupted. His mother has taken a job as a housecleaner and all his siblings have left home to work in his recently urbanized hometown, Ilsan. Against this backdrop Mak-dong struggles to find his way, to find gainful employment and to seek some hope for a future that seems very insecure. While looking for work, Mak-dong sees the woman from the train, Mi-ae, and follows her into a nightclub where she is a singer. This sets the stage for the central drama of the film in which Mi-Ae and Mak-dong form a love triangle with Mi-Ae’s gang-boss boyfriend Bae Tae-gon. Bae Tae-gon, or Big brother as his underlings refer to him, offers Mak-dong work which, while having a legitimate starting point in a parking garage, quickly escalates into more dangerous and more lucrative work. Green Fish is a gangster film, a neo-noir that oscillates without warning between quiet scenes of lonely contemplation and surprising, awkward, and brutal violence. The gang of thugs hovering around Bae Tae-gon, who become Mak-dong’s default peer group, have a tenuous camaraderie which can be (and is often) shattered at the slightest provocation, a word or a sidelong glance. Their competition for Bae Tae-gon’s approval belie their casually friendly association. Mak-dong is lost but he is not disaffected. He seems to be accepting of his limited prospects but as his affection grows for both Mi-Ae and Bae Tae-gon, we see the greater risks he will take in order to solidify those relationships. Green Fish is a masterful piece of cinema in its aesthetics, its performances and its dialogue. The gritty street life and class portrayals are reminiscent of a Ken Loach film. In viewing Green Fish for the first time 27 years after its original release, and after the South Korean Gangster genre has evolved from this, one of its earliest examples, it is striking how far the genre has come, while adhering to common elements of the genre.
