The Efficacy of Green Roofs in Mediterranean Climates: A Critical Evaluation of Energy-Saving Potential
Notice bibliographique
Résumé
AbstractThis study provides an exhaustive evaluation of the performance and viability of green roofsystems within the semi-arid climatic zones of Karnataka, India. As rapid urban expansioncharacterizes cities across the Deccan Plateau, the rising reliance on mechanical cooling methodssignificantly exacerbates local energy demand and contributes to the intensifying Urban HeatIsland effect. While green roofs are frequently proposed as a sustainable mitigation strategyglobally, their efficacy in the unique environment of Karnataka is challenged by systemic waterscarcity, erratic precipitation patterns, and distinct seasonal evapotranspiration rates. This articleconducts an in-depth analysis of the thermal regulation potential offered by drought-tolerantvegetation, examines the critical water requirements for sustainable system maintenance, andassesses the overall feasibility of implementation within this specific geographic and climaticcontext. By analyzing the intricate interplay between building physics and xeriscaping, thisresearch identifies the precise conditions under which green roofs serve as a net benefit to urbansustainability. The study concludes that success is contingent upon a fundamental, systemic shift towardindigenous plant selection, deep-substrate engineering, and decentralized rainwater harvestingsystems that treat rooftop water management as an essential component of building utility. Thiswork argues for a transition away from imported, water-intensive green roof models toward aregional paradigm that prioritizes drought resilience, native biodiversity, and the decoupling ofurban cooling from the potable water supply. By synthesis of existing climate data and structuralcase studies, the research offers a comprehensive roadmap for integrating ecological performanceinto the built environment of the Deccan. Keywords: Green roofs, Semi-arid climate, Karnataka, Urban Heat Island, Water efficiency,Thermal regulation, Xeriscaping, Sustainable urban planning, Deccan Plateau
