Calcutta (Kolkata), 2013, pp. 186, price Indian rupees 495/-, ISBN: 978-81-7074-341-5.Dr. Ananda Bhattacharya, Assistant Director of West Bengal Archives, is well-known for studies on 18th and 19th centuries with important research oriented publications such as the Indigo'Rebellions'. A Selection and the Banglay Sufi Andolan. He has also contributed papers to 400 years of Dhaka and beyond and also regular research based articles in various leading journals including the Journal of the Pakistan Historical Society (Historicus).In the book under review Dr. Bhattacharya, on the eve of 150 years of the Ghadar (Ghadr) National Uprising has re-produced six important and significant articles pertaining to the events in Eastern India in the regions of Bihar, Bengal and Asam.The first article taken from George Dodds' The History of the Indian Revolt and of the Expeditions to Persia, China and Nepal 1856-1858 (London 1859) deals with the events and happenings in Bengal and Lower Ganges Regions. It shows that in spite of the episode of Mangal Pandey and reports about the exchanges and slogans of Tulsi, Ganges water, Lotus flower besides chapatis there was no general flare up and this vast region with the imperial head quarters at Calcutta remained under control. Even the native population of Calcutta, benificiaries of living in the new capital, remained loyal. Perhaps the rhetoric of the rebel leaders from Delhi and U.P. regions either did not reach them or remained un-appeaiing. No doubt disturbances were reported from Sylhet, Chachar, Barrackpore and Rangpur but remained unconnected with each other or neighbouring areas. These half-hearted and late reactions (in 1858) were easily handled. So this area remained marginalized in the conflict like the regions of Bombay and Madras.Some unpublished Documents Regarding the Mutiny of 1857 from R.C. Majumdar's Bengal Past and Present (pbd. 1957) provides an alternate but rather unsavoury aspect of some leading figures of the uprising. The Mughul princes and Zeenat Mahal, the leading queen of Bahadur Shah, were trying to secure favour of the English commanders. Rani of Jhansi was also reported communicating with Mr. Erskine, the Commissioner of Sagar, and also with the Peshwa. Even Tantya Topei was reported to have advised the Rani to make peace with the English. If these records are genuine they show double dealings or hesitations of these personages.Manmatha Nath Das in, Bengal, Past and Present, rejects the theories of Western writers, that Western innovations like introduction of railways and telegraphs etc. were responsible for the uprising. He, however, agrees with Richard Templer that certain projects of Dalhousie were more responsible for it.M.K.
