Jennifer Reid, Finding Kluskap: A Journey into Mi'kmaw Myth. University Park: Pennsylvania State University Press, 2013.136 pages. ISBN 978-0271-06068-2. $64.95 USD hardcover.As author herself admits, this is difficult book to categorize. First of all, its brevity should not be interpreted to suggest that it is in any way cursory or lacking depth and comprehensiveness of analysis. Second, it is part of series sponsored by Institute for Signifying Scriptures at Claremont Graduate University. According to their promotional material, books in this series focus on the textures, signs, material products, practices, orientations, politics, and power issues associated with sociocultural phenomenon of invention and engagement of scriptures. Third, book is informed by journey motif, one that captures both journey of Kluskap, as his mythic identity and stories attached to it evolve to reflect current conditions, and that of author, as scholar and as friend of Mi'kmaq.Reid recounts that project started when she was asked to be part of panel discussion in celebration of fortieth anniversary of publication of Charles Long's Alpha: The Myths of Creation (George Braziller, 1963). What initially looked like straightforward exercise in examining mythic hero Kluskap in light of Long's emphasis on journeys, turned into near decade long pilgrimage. For her research, Reid not only consulted various accounts of Kluskap myths that had been recorded over years, she also called upon her contacts in Mi'kmaw communities to provide her with current stories. While working through this exercise Reid discovered that she was hearing about everything except Kluskap, from Integrative Science program at Cape Breton University, through demise of oyster farming in Bras d'Or Lakes due to an invasive parasite, to lasting impact of residential school experience. What she concluded from her efforts was that myth is not just means of gaining insight into sacred history of people, but that it can also serve as a medium of orientation in modem world (26).Taking more detailed look at content of recorded myths about Kluskap and new stories she was hearing, Reid compares this material with information on origin, reception and application of treaties in this same period. Her analysis suggests that myths reflect sacred discourse through which encounter of Mi'kmaq with non-Native peoples and with land was and is both remembered and legitimized.At heart of book is an exploration of Saint Anne, grandmother of Jesus and patron saint of Mi'kmaw people, whose annual celebration takes place on July 27th at Potlotek (Chapel Island), oldest Catholic mission in Canada. …
