While the singing of the church may often have alternated between lamentation and exaltation, a study of hymnic anniversaries to be celebrated in 2015 clearly shows that it has been steadily flowing for many centuries. This article will explore the hymns, writers, composers, and collections that have sustained this endless song.1965The last phase of the Second Vatican Council opened. In the midst of continuing protests and social unrest in the U. S., President Lyndon lohnson proclaimed the Great Society in his State of the Union address. Medicare and Medicaid were inaugurated as part of the War on Poverty, and the Voting Rights Act became law. Civil Rights activists marched from Selma to Montgomery, and a demonstration against the Vietnam War drew some 25,000 antiwar protestors to Washington, D.C. The red and white maple leaf flag replaced Canada's Union Flag and the Canadian Red Ensign. The Canadian political landscape was altered with the election of lean Marchand, Gerard Pelletier, and Pierre Trudeau; dubbed the Three Wisemen by pundits, they aimed to strengthen the voice of their Quebecois constituencies in Ottawa.HymnsFor the healing of the nations, Fred Kaan's bestknown hymn, was first heard in a worship service at the Pilgrim Church in Plymouth, England. Written in celebration of Human Rights Day (December 10th), it has appeared in more than two dozen hymnals since its initial publication in Pilgrim Praise.
