In addition to Henry of Huntingdon's Historia Anglorum, Cambridge University Library MS Gg . 2 . 21, a northern French manuscript of the later twelfth century, l contains two minor works of Bede, De temporibus and De Natura Rerum, and a collection of episcopal lists relating to nine northern French sees and Canterbury, compiled in 1148/9. 2 A single leaf from a ninth-century manuscript written in Caroline minuscule script is attached at the end, after the last leaf, f. 100 (see figs 1-2). It is mounted on a piece of parchment whose stub is inserted between the twelfth and thirteenth quires of the main manuscript, that is, between ff. 94v and 95r. The printed catalogue description refers only briefly to the nature of the contents of this single leaf, and provides no further information whatsoever. The nature of this flyleaf, therefore, as well as its relationship to the manuscript into which it has been bound, needs to be investigated. Both the last folio of the main manuscript and the flyleaf are damaged and stained. Damage to the margins of f. 100 has necessitated the replacement of approximately one-quarter of the leaf with modern parchment. The verso which, as far as I can see, was never ruled for writing, is stained yellow ; there are some darker marks and several small holes. A larger crease runs down the length of the page between the two columns of text. Some ink marks on the right-hand side of the margin might be an offset, but none of the legible groups of letters can be matched to the flyleaf. It is possible that f. 100 was not always the final leaf of the manuscript. The extent of the damage it has suffered, however, would suggest that it was at some stage the final leaf of an unbound manuscript. A piece of the flyleaf containing part of the bottom six lines of text is missing from the lower, inner corner, but has been repaired in modern times. The margins are creased and have several holes which have been patched. The whole leaf would appear at some time to have been folded in half horizontally across the middle and then twice longitudinally to divide the half sheet into three. The very dark staining of the top half of the recto indicates that this portion of the parchment was outermost after folding ; could this leaf have been used as a wrapper for a book ?
