Andrew F. Fraser, MRCVS, MVSc has an extensive background in animal behaviour and was the original editor-in-chief of the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science. He also authored the original edition of this book, which was published in 1992. This second edition was published as a result of the changing field of animal behaviour and its relationship to practical animal welfare. Applied research has generated considerable advances in the understanding of the nature of animal behaviour. In particular, information on horse behaviour in the past decades has increased dramatically. The horse’s manner of living, its nature, and its means of dealing with its domesticated conditions are explored in this edition. This book also advises actions in support of the horse’s basic well-being that fit its behaviour and circumstances. Topics covered in this edition include the development of equine behaviour, feed/water welfare, body care, racing, rest, work and transportation, breeding welfare, mare/ foal dynamics, foal welfare, humane control, husbandry, and disordered behaviour and stress. Numerous graphs, figures, and photographs, in black and white, are included in the text for clarification or to present data from studies. The horse plays a unique role in human activities for work and recreation. An understanding of horses’ behaviour and needs is vital for practical welfare. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the latest research on the behaviour of the horse and its relation to welfare, as well as incorporating information on the understanding of the relationship between physiology and performance and the neuro-chemical basis of stereotypic behaviour. Other additions to this second edition include new chapters on Human Horse Care and Carriage Horse Welfare, which have both been published privately by the Canadian Farm Animal Care Trust. The focus of this newest edition to provide information that is important in the recognition, establishment, and maintenance of the horse’s well-being. Veterinary medicine should provide a major support for horse welfare and does this best when combined with knowledge of normal and abnormal horse behaviour. This book would be of interest to veterinarians and technicians with a role in welfare or equine practice, as well as animal scientists and ethologists. Anyone with a role or interest in equine welfare would find this book to be a very practical source of information.
