Résumé
This past year the New Brunswick Veterinary Medical Association (NBVMA) has, through its various committees and volunteers, addressed several issues. The Drug Committee, concerned with the sale of medications, outlined the new veterinary-patient-client relationship (VCPR) that was voted/carried at the annual general meeting and accepted into the Association's bylaws. It clearly indicates under which circumstances medications can be sold in the province and underlines the importance of carrying out a clinical examination before prescribing drugs. Other related topics of concern in New Brunswick include internet pharmacies, and the interprovincial and international sale of drugs. The Practice Standards Committee has been busy exploring the subject of continuing education (CE), and establishing minimum CE requirements. As part of the NBVMA annual general meeting weekend, a CE program was included. Well attended by the members present at the meeting, the program is one way the Association is encouraging and facilitating CE for veterinarians in this province. With the conviction of a puppy mill owner under the Criminal Code of Canada this summer, an amendment to the Association's bylaws was incorporated to allow veterinarians to break confidentiality to report suspected cases of cruelty against animals. This action follows the discussion held in Halifax at the CVMA convention, at which Dr. Alice Crook outlined Bill C-15. Due to the increasing incidence of emerging diseases that, until recently, were very rare or unheard of in New Brunswick, the initiative was taken to encourage members to e-mail “new” disease diagnoses to the membership. The information can be relayed from one address to the rest of the membership within a short time frame and should prove useful when disease entities, such as that caused by West Nile virus, make their way to this province (please note that no cases of disease caused by West Nile virus have yet been found in New Brunswick). Rabies is still a concern in New Brunswick. Three cases of raccoon variant rabies have been recorded in the province this year, a dramatic decrease from the 48 cases recorded in 2001. The provincial government's trap-vaccinate-and-release program has been effective in helping to reduce the number of rabies cases and was continued this summer. To date, there have been no cases of raccoon variant rabies in domestic animals or humans, and the virus seems to be contained, for now, in the southern part of New Brunswick. The NBVMA also continues to work closely with provincial public health authorities to respond to zoonotic disease issues such as rabies and leptospirosis. (by Dr. James P. Goltz, President, New Brunswick Veterinary Medical Association, Fredericton, New Brunswick)
