Abstract
This chapter introduces the cellular system, describing frequency reuse, cell geometry, handoff, and sectorization. It then presents duplexing with frequency- and time-division methods and multiplexing techniques that enable simultaneous services. Multiple access methods are reviewed, including FDMA, TDMA, and CDMA, with discussion of their operating principles. Random access schemes are outlined, beginning with pure and slotted ALOHA and extending to carrier-sense protocols. Scheduled access methods are described, such as reservation, polling, and token passing. NOMA is introduced as an advanced approach for enhancing spectrum efficiency and user fairness. The chapter concludes with Erlang capacity analysis in the uplink as a measure of traffic performance.
