La notion de «mentalité de garnison» de Northrop Frye est un point de départ pour l’analyse de l’espace canadien sous le prisme de l’agoraphobie. Contrairement au «royaume paisible», que Frye associe à un projet non réalisé, la «mentalité de garnison» est bien enracinée dans un lieu et liée à des notions telles que «espace» et «nature sauvage». Le personnage principal du roman de Stef Penney, Madame Ross, fait un voyage vers le Nord, paysage vide qu’elle redoute, et enrichit sa narration d’une perspective extrêmement agoraphobe. Bien que l’énigme d’un meurtre constitue le principal centre d’intérêt du roman, l’objectif de cet article est d’explorer les rapports entre les concepts tels que «mentalité de garnison» et «agoraphobie» et de manière plus générale de réfléchir sur l’intérêt des théories de l’agoraphobie dans la lecture du paysage canadien.
