La pol?tica tur?stica del r?gimen franquista logr? el masivo advenimiento a las costas e islas espa?olas del viajero noreuropeo, fen?meno econ?mico que suscit?, asimismo, profundos cambios de toda ?ndole en la sociedad de los a?os 6o en ade lante. Como respuesta al desarrollo de la geograf?a nacional en parque de atrac ciones para la clase obrera de pa?ses de m?s all? del Pirineo, escritores y cineastas dentro de Espa?a concibieron novelas, antolog?as de cuentos y pel?culas que ofre c?an un comentario mordaz del fen?meno tur?stico. Entre estos productos cultu rales figura Las europeas (1970), novela del prolifico y multifac?tico Francisco Umbral que cuenta los amor?os de un joven espa?ol con cinco turistas del norte de Europa. As?, adem?s de rescatar una 'olvidada' novela de Umbral, este art?cu lo propone que el deseo sexual que evidencia el joven narrador espa?ol por los cinco personajes femeninos se hace eco del deseo del hombre espa?ol por apro piarse del poder pol?tico y econ?mico que supuestamente gozaban los ciudadanos noreuropeos. Aseveramos, asimismo, que la textualizaci?n de las protagonistas extranjeras se puede leer como indicaci?n de la dif?cil relaci?n que siempre man tuvo el autor con las mujeres, as? como de la percepci?n umbraliana del desarro llo tur?stico de su pa?s.
