Abstract
Desde los inicios de la revolucion industrial, los trabajadores y sus aliados han defendido la reduccion del tiempo de trabajo por dos razones fundamentales. Primero, porque ganar tiempo fuera del horario laboral es una via fundamental para mejorar la calidad de vida. Segundo, porque la reduccion de la jornada laboral ha sido considerada una forma de reducir el desempleo mediante la redistribucion del empleo disponible. Con el tiempo, la dificil pero exitosa lucha por la reduccion de la jornada laboral consiguio logros concretos, como las ocho horas diarias, el fin de semana de dos dias, vacaciones pagadas, bajas por maternidad/paternidad y derechos a la jubilacion. Actualmente, a tales motivaciones historicas para una reduccion del tiempo de trabajo empleo y tiempo extralaboral se le ha sumado una nueva razon: la necesidad de reducir el impacto de las sociedades humanas sobre el medio ambiente.
