Abstract
Un an?lisis riguroso de la variedad y complejidad presentadas por la represen taci?n de la muerte pone en entredicho la hegemon?a actual de la dicotom?a entre duelo y mescolio que Freud propuso como respuestas encontradas a la p?rdida. En contra de lo que postula Freud, el trabajo del duelo nunca puede ser comple tado, pues los muertos se resisten a dejarnos. Y no nos dejan porque, como se?ala Derrida, han estado ah? desde el principio, constituyendo nuestra identidad y nuestra memoria. Partiendo de la pregunta de por qu? toda muerte resulta siem pre incre?ble y sorprendente, en este art?culo se examinan los efectos que la muer te tiene en los sobrevivientes en una obra autobiogr?fica de Juan Goytisolo, Coto vedado (1986), en una novela de Manuel Rivas, El l?piz del carpintero (1998), y en la pel?cula Cr?a cuervos (1075J, de Carlos Saura. Los muertos siempre vuelven porque, como escribe L?vinas, la muerte no es de este mundo. Una lectura atenta de lo que significan esos retornos espectrales nos lleva a concluir que la muerte no est? al final sino al principio, antes de nada, y que es necesario asumir esa antici paci?n para entender el ser precario de la conciencia, el tiempo y la memoria.
