Abstract
It's difficult to find estimates of Canada's "Non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment" (NAIRU).In this paper, the productivity growth trend, both in levels and in changes, is included in a state-space model to estimate a time-varying NAIRU (TV-NAIRU).Using the Kalman filter, the results show it does not significantly improve the model performance for the period 1978-2003.The small variation in the productivity trend may be the source of this ambiguity.Finally, an estimate of Canada's NAlRU is also obtained in the model without productivity growth.It is quite stable and robust to different measures of inflation rate and unemployment rate, which suggests that the major determinants of Canada's NAlRU didn't change much in this period...........
