A distribuição das dermatoses na população canina deve ser considerada um tema fundamental no ensino e na prática da medicina veterinária. Existem poucos dados sobre a demografia dos distúrbios cutâneos caninos tanto na medicina veterinária no Brasil como em outros países. No presente estudo, foram revistos 2.178 prontuários de animais atendidos no Hospital de Pequenos Animais da Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária (FAMED), em Garça-SP. Dentre esses prontuários, foram selecionados os de 910 animais que apresentavam problemas cutâneos, os quais foram divididos em 3 grupos: as dermatoses parasitárias (infestação por carrapato, dermatite alérgica a picada de pulgas, miíase, demodicose, escabiose e otite parasitária); dermatoses infecciosas (dermatite bacteriana, otite bacteriana, dermatofitose, acne canina, abscesso, malassezia e pododermatite) e tumores cutâneos (não-neoplásica, neoplasia epitelial, neoplasia mesenquimal e neoplasia de célula redonda). Após análise estatística, observou-se que as dermatoses mais diagnosticadas nos cães foram, em ordem decrescente de freqüência, infestação por carrapato, foliculite bacteriana, dermatite alérgica a picada de pulgas, otites bacterianas, demodicose, dematofitose, miíase, escabiose canina, abscesso e otite parasitária. Em seguida, compararam-se esses resultados com aqueles obtidos em outras regiões do Brasil e países subtropicais, evidenciando-se, assim, as diferenças na incidência dessas dermatoses. A análise dos resultados possibilitou concluir-se que as dermatoses infecciosas e parasitárias ocorreram com maior freqüência em animais jovens, enquanto as neoplasias cutâneas tiveram maior incidência nos animais mais velhos. Além da faixa etária, a predisposição racial também foi avaliada, sendo que as raças mais acometidas foram Pastor Alemão, Rottweiler, Boxer, Cocker Spaniel, Fox Paulistinha, Dachshund, Fila Brasileiro, Labrador, outras raças e Poodle...
