The first academic computer science departments in the USA were formed in the mid-1960s. Some 30 years later, in 1998, more than 175 departments of computer science and computer engineering granted Ph.D.s in the USA and Canada. (Several of these in the past decade have changed their name from Computer Science to Computer Science and Engineering, due in part to the move of some departments to engineering colleges.) It is estimated that another thousand colleges and universities award undergraduate or master's degrees in computer science.
