Abstract
This article focuses, briefly, on the Portuguese colonial policy, between 1870 and 1955 in particular the role played by the ministers Joao de Andrade Corvo, Barbosa du Bocage, and Antonio Enes, at the Foreign and Colonial Office. This period unfolds under the sign of tensions between Portugal and Britain concerning the future of Portugal's presence in Africa during the last quarter of the XLX century. The guidelines of Estado Novo colonial policy are also focused, along with Salazar's determination to defend Portugal's African and Asian colonies against mounting nationalism and against a new policy - non-alignment - which arose during the 1950s and 1960s, that emerged from Bandullg Conference (Apri l 1955). Afro-Asian policies were consciously orientated towards a confrontation with the Portuguese government as a strategy based on self-determination. The relationship between the above-mentioned countries and Portugal was aggravated by the political and ideological struggle between USSR and United States.
