Abstract
June Levine nat en 1932 Dublin, d'une mre catholique et d'un pre juif. Elle hrite d'emble d'une double culture fortement ancre dans des traditions patriarcales. Aprs avoir pous un jeune tudiant en mdecine, elle quitte Dublin pour le Canada o elle s'installe et fonde une famille. Lentement et imperceptiblement, elle sombre dans une profonde dpression. A cette poque, Betty Friedan publie The Feminine Mystique. Elle y dcrit les souffrances endures par des femmes intelligentes et ambitieuses, enfermes dans la cage dore du mariage. June lit ce livre sans, de son propre aveu, forcment bien en comprendre les enjeux. Mais elle se rend nanmoins compte que sa vie ne peut se limiter tre une bonne pouse et une bonne mre. Aprs une hospitalisation, au cours de laquelle elle subit lectrochocs et traitements l'insuline, elle rentre en Irlande avec ses trois enfants mais sans son mari.
