Abstract
Saint Petersburg Telegraph Agency (SPTA) was set up in 1904. For the first time in the Russian history this agency became independent from foreign news agencies (Reuter, Wolf, Havas etc.). In this article the reasons, motives and processes in Russian news agencies’ independent development in the first quarter of the 20th century have been studied.
