Abstract
Providing airlines and military assets with clean, dry and on-specification fuel types is something on which aviation flight safety is greatly reliant. In-line filtration, furthermore, in use throughout the fuel supply chain, including airport facilities and suppliers' terminals, is something on which contaminant free fuel delivery to aircraft relies. Filter elements qualified by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the Energy Institute (formerly the Institute of Petroleum (IP)) standard 1583 are commonly called filter monitors or waste absorbing elements and contain a super absorbent polymer (SAP) unique to individual design. The author examines the consequences of SAP migration, the Canadian Forces action plan for filter monitor asset removal from its refueling assets for primary reliance on the coalescence principle as provided by API/IP 1581 standard qualified filter water separators, and general recommendations on filter monitor use.
