This article describes the design of a network tied-arch bridge to be constructed across the Ohio River between West Virginia and Ohio. The bridge will rank among the longest-span structures of this type in the world. The total bridge length measures over 4,000 ft. The tied-arch section measures 878-ft-long, with a 175-ft-long rise and a 76-ft-high clearance. The tied-arch section uses a unique hanger arrangement that incorporates two families of inclined hangers forming a network. The network hanger system is stiffer than the traditional vertical hanger system, and substantially reduces bending movements in arch ribs and tie beams. The tied arch design was chosen to meet the environmental and historical protection requirements of the site.
