L’annonce de la mort est un motif récurrent dans la tragédie antique ainsi que dans la dramaturgie moderne et contemporaine. Le présent article met en lumière la fonction dramaturgique du personnage du Messager dans le système de représentation tragique. Privilégiant une approche historique et sociocritique, l’analyse se prolonge dans l’examen des avatars de la figure du Messager dans le théâtre moderne. Repris par l’auteur symboliste Maurice Maeterlinck dans la pièce Intérieur (1894), le thème de l’annonce de la mort se déploie à la faveur d’un intertexte antique explicite tout en opérant la transition vers son expression moderne. Un coup d’oeil sur une production récente de ce texte par le metteur en scène québécois Denis Marleau clôt cette étude en suggérant que le théâtre serait peut-être l’un des derniers lieux où la mort s’élève aux dimensions d’une parole collective et symbolique.
