Dear editor, I do not agree with the Letter to the Editor in the May issue of The Canadian Veterinary Journal (Can Vet J 2015;56:433) about the horses on Sable Island. These are indeed wild horses, not domesticated ones. They became wild horses in the same way that those in western North America became wild, by being abandoned by humans hundreds of years ago. Their habitat is no more hostile than that of other wild herds. That they are doing as well as any population of wild animals, and their feed is adequate for health, is shown by the rapid increase in their numbers. The herd grew from a few abandoned horses to over 400 and growing. Currently, they have no predators and because of the limited human contact, no exposure to infectious equine diseases. If we increase human contact, along with feed, shelters, etc., eventually diseases to which these horses have no immunity will be introduced. The last thing these horses need is a bunch of do-gooders invading their habitat to try to “save” them.
