Der Sachverhalt, der sich uns im Vorstehenden herausgestellt hat, lasst sich, wenn ich richtig urtheile, ungezwungen nur so erklaren, dass Aristoteles und Plutarch ein und dieselbe politische Schrift vor Augen gehabt haben, in welcher das Thema rcepi (JTOKXeujv, und zwar in der Weise behandelt war, dass die theoretische Erorterung durch Beispiele aus der Geschichte erlautert und gestutzt war. Seit dem Ausgang des funften Jahrhunderts war an den geistigen Centren der griechischen Welt eine mannigfaltige politische Literatur aufgeschossen ; dass Aristoteles diese in umfassendem Sinne gekannt und bei dem Aufbau seiner Staatslehre, je nach dem, verwerthet hat, wurde anzunehmen sein, auch wenn nicht directe, in grosserer Zahl aber indirecte Hinweise in der Politik Zeugniss dafur ablegten. Das alteste bekannte Beispiel der bezeichneten Methode ist, so viel ich weise, das Buch des Taktikers Aineias, in welchem die Theorie des Festlingskrieges durchgehend mit geschichtlichen Paradigmen belegt wird; aber sicherlich ist der unbedeutende Aineias nicht derjenige gewesen, welcher diesen Weg zuerst eingeschlagen und Andere zur Nachfolge angeregt hat.
