Cet article presente un etat de l'art international sur la gestion en temps reel des systemes d'assainissement urbains. Il est tres largement inspire d'un article paru dans le numero special de Journal of Hydrology consacre a l'hydrologie urbaine (Real time control of urban wastewater systems - where do we stand today? [SCHuTZE et al., 2004]). Il montre a la fois l'interet et les limites des systemes actuels et leur mode de fonctionnement. Il est illustre par l'etude du cas de la ville de Quebec au Canada. Il tente de mettre en evidence les grands enseignements tires de 30 annees de pratique et s'aventure a emettre des hypotheses sur les evolutions probables dans les annees a venir.
