Durante estas três décadas, envolvi-me em avaliações de ambiciosos projectos de introdução de novas tecnologias nas organizações. Testemunhei a repetição deste padrão muito frequentemente: as expectativas iniciais altas, encorajadas pelos aficionados entusiásticos das novas tecnologias, terminam provocando um relativo desapontamento e, às vezes, uma desilusão. Mas após um terço de século talvez esteja na hora de analisar mais profundamente as razões para este fraco desempenho. Neste artigo, sugeri uma possível via de investigação. Coloquei a hipótese de a tecnologia incorporar o “texto” errado sendo incapaz de lidar com a complexidade das organizações modernas que vivem uma tensão crescente devido aos processos simultâneos e paradoxais de centralização e distribuição. Evidentemente, assumo o pressuposto de que nós definimos o “texto” de uma forma mais sociológica: não como uma fotocópia estática ou uma representação da comunicação organizacional, mas antes como reflexivamente constituído na sua relação com a prática e com os objectos – teoria da co-orientação.
