Abstract

The hydraulic lift lock on the Trent-Severn Waterway at Peterborough, Ontario, was constructed in 1904 from unreinforced concrete. The choice of concrete for construction of the lock was considered innovative. A new method of concrete mixing was specified by the engineer, whose tests demonstrated that reducing water and adding as much cement as necessary produced a watertight and abrasion-resistant material. The lift lock has proved durable for 100 years.
