Depuis pres de 5000 ans des groupes humains ont vecu dans un des environnements les plus extremes de la planete ou l'hiver la temperature descend souvent pres de -50° Celsius, ou les vastes etendues de territoire sont souvent balayees de vents violents, ou les ressources naturelles sont limitees et parfois difficiles d'acces et ou la saison estivale, malgre une temperature plus clemente, peut etre aussi une periode difficile. Pourtant les Inuits et leurs predecesseurs paleoesquimaux ont occupe ces territoires arctiques et y ont developpe des modes de vie parfaitement adaptes a ces conditions particulieres. L'article qui suit presente certains aspects de la culture materielle resultant de ces modes de vie.
