Abstract
P.K. Page’s story “Unless the Eye Catch Fire” stands out in her oeuvre, in part because of its relative length but also due to its mixing of genres - part fictional narrative, part autobiographical journal, and part prose poem. Despite its distinctive form and style, it embodies an allegorical structure which explores the theme of spiritual self-transformation. This is a key theme across her poetry and prose. “Unless the Eye Catch Fire” resembles allegories of alchemical transformation, focussing on processes of transmutation through fire, where fire is not only for burning but is a source of light - spectral, visionary and spiritual. This essay offers a reading of “Unless the Eye Catch Fire” as an alchemical allegory and argues that Page’s handling of alchemical themes goes beyond simply imitating or borrowing from alchemical traditions, but represents a unique aesthetic vision of mystical transformation.
